چکیده

Curiosity, which has been described as a ‘hunger for knowledge’, plays a critical role in the acquisition of information, but its underlying mechanisms are not well understood. We explored the neural correlates of curiosity by scanning subjects with fMRI while they read trivia questions which create a mixture of high and low curiosity. We tested one implication of out initial findings in a follow-up study in which we measured subjects’ pupil dilation and tested memory recall. When subjects are more curious, there is more activity in caudate regions known to be involved in anticipated reward, and their pupils dilate more just before receiving answers. Both effects are consistent with the hypothesis that curiosity reflects a hunger for information. Our fMRI results also showed that curiosity increases activity in memory areas such as parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and left inferior frontal gyrus (left IFG) when subjects guess incorrectly, which suggests that curiosity may enhance memory for new information. This prediction about memory enhancement is borne out in the second study which demonstrated that higher curiosity in the initial session is correlated with better recall of answers, in support of the initial implication that curiosity improves learning.

Epistemic Curiosity Activates Reward Circuitry and Enhances Memory

Curiosity has been described as a desire for learning and knowledge, but its underlying mechanisms are not well understood. We scanned subjects with functional magnetic resonance imaging while they read trivia questions. The level of curiosity when reading questions was correlated with activity in caudate regions previously suggested to be involved in anticipated reward. This finding led to a b...

Neural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception

Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...

Neural Correlates of Craving in Methamphetamine Abuse

Introduction: Methamphetamine is a powerful psychostimulant that causes significant neurological impairments with long-lasting effects and has provoked serious international concerns about public health. Denial of drug abuse and drug craving are two important factors that make the diagnosis and treatment extremely challenging. Here, we present a novel and rapid noninvasive method...

Exploring Neural Correlates of Different Dimensions in Drug Craving Self-Reports among Heroin Dependents

Introduction: Drug craving could be described as a motivational state which drives drug dependents towards drug seeking and use. Different types of self-reports such as craving feeling, desire and intention, wanting and need, imagery of use, and negative affect have been attributed to this motivational state. By using subjective self-reports for different correlates of drug craving along ...

Neural Correlates of Appetite and Hunger-Related Evaluative Judgments

How much we desire a meal depends on both the constituent foods and how hungry we are, though not every meal becomes more desirable with increasing hunger. The brain therefore needs to be able to integrate hunger and meal properties to compute the correct incentive value of a meal. The present study investigated the functional role of the amygdala and the orbitofrontal cortex in mediating hunge...
